If you ever find happiness by hunting for it, you will find it as the old woman did her lost spectacles. Safe on her own nose all the time. ~ Josh Billings

Sky Concert

Well, like just about everyone else I watched the fireworks last night. But this time it was a little more exciting because I have never watched them in a big city. Plus, Peoria's is extra cool because they set them off from a barge on the river and they are synchronized to music as well, hence the name "Sky Concert." So Derek and I parked by the casino and watched them over the river. They were beautiful!

Today was my first day on the floors full time. Right now I'm in Neurology, so it's a combination of mainly car accidents and strokes. So that's what I'm doing...Wow, I really wish I had more to say to give you all the illusion that my life is exciting, but it's mainly the same old stuff. My plans for this week include grocery shopping, a trip to the laundry mat, and if I get real adventurous, maybe I'll clean the toilet-but I doubt it.

Neurology?? I understand that people with strokes might have to change their diet, but car accidents? What do you do with them?

We see every patient that is admitted to the hospital, regardless of the reason. We see them for various reasons. Primarily, we need to make sure they are receiving enough calories and protein, even if they are overweight. This is because when the body is in stress (from an injury, illness, etc.) it requires more calories protein than normal. So, even if the patient is 500 lbs. we still have to make sure they are eating enough or getting enough in their tube feeding/IV feeding, whatever the case may be. We also have to make sure all of their other vitamin and mineral needs are being met. For example, smokers require more Vitamin C to heal, alcoholics more Thiamine. Then if there is any need for diet education we do that as well. I often just explain to people that I educate people after heart attacks, kidney failure, etc. because that's the easy definition of a dietitians job, but there's a lot more to it than that. Sorry for the lengthy explaination, but now you'll know :) (If you cared!)

I think your job sounds exciting (even if you don't!)! At least it proves you learned SOMETHING at Bluffton. Sometimes I wonder if anything sunk in to me!!
