If you ever find happiness by hunting for it, you will find it as the old woman did her lost spectacles. Safe on her own nose all the time. ~ Josh Billings

Blessings

Ever since Derek and I moved to Peoria I've been complaining constantly because we don't have any money. Let me rephrase that-we have money to pay our bills and nothing more. This means no shopping, no trips, and lots of nights sitting at home playing cards. Well, Saturday I was put in my place. I mentioned the health fair in the ghetto. Our booth was all centered around 500 calories and helping people make food choices. We had 3 heads of brocolli in one bowl, 8 apples in another bowl, a small bowl of potato chips, and a plate with 4 donut holes. All represented 500 calories, and intended to show that your food choices are very important. Example, "Look at all of the fruits and vegetables you could eat for the same calories as 4 donut holes!" Well, back to me being put in my not-as-poor-as-I-thought place. One of the other interns, Eva, and I spent much of the health fair just protecting our display of foods. Every few minutes children would be asking us over and over again if they could have an apple. Some would just walk up to our booth and look down at the food and not say a word. They were hungry. I complain because I can't go shopping, or go to Chicago for the weekend and these kids just wanted food. I am officially grateful for what I have. I just wish it didn't take starving children to make me realize I am blessed.

I have a feeling that I am going to complain about not having any money soon when I start my voluntary service. I am going to try to spend less than my stipend every month ($250). We'll see how that goes. Thanks for the post..sometimes we forget how blessed we are.

Abby- This is a great reminder to all of us to look at our lives through a broader scope. I know there are always things that I complain about that are silly. It is good to be reminded not to. Thanks!

You don't have to go to Bangladesh to find hungry kids.
